GOOD NEWS FOR NEUROSURGEONS!

And all New York City hospitals with
underused emergency rooms. New York City's new rent-a-bike program will not provide helmets! According to their web site and the information posted on each new rental kiosk, we are "encouraged" to buy a helmet before using one of their bicycles. They'll even direct us to the nearest store.

That's like buying a seatbelt before hailing a cab or buying an airbag before renting a car.

Good thinking City Council and corporate sponsor, Citibank. That's really using your head.

  1. Hmmm... the other cities that have bikeshare programs have the same problem. Owning your own helmet is probably the best solution, true, but perhaps there alternatives.

I used to play a game down in Kenilworth, NJ, called "Photon"-- really a first-generation laser tag system, in many ways more complex than the current. One difference: the Photon vest/jacket/pistol also had an attached helmet. The staff would usually clean these helmets between games, but they also supplied disposable paper "bonnets" worn under the helmet.

A paper-bonnet dispenser might work for CitiBike, but then they would have had to add a helmet rack system to the bike rack.

  2. I like the idea of helmets and liners because it's safe AND clean. What's more, it's the perfect job for New York City's Department of Mental hygiene.
