What’s that smell? It can only be American politics.
The “Nay State” Votes.
I used to think that Massachusetts was so liberal that they’d elect a Democrat without thinking. After choosing Scott Brown to replace the late Senator Edward M. Kennedy, it’s clear that they’ll elect a Republican without thinking. too.
Where’s Anatole France when you need him?
The Supreme Court, in its majestic equality, protects the right of the rich as well as the poor to buy political candidates, bribe media and steal elections.
The “Swamp State” sinks even lower.
Governor Mark Sanford and Congressman Joe Wilson are not the only creatures living in the mud of South Carolina politics. Add Lieut. Governor Andre Bauer, who recently compared children in a free school lunch program to stray animals who must not be fed or they will multiply. As they say down South, “A man who won’t use his head might as well have two assholes.”
What is it about the Carolinas?
North Carolina, the state that perfected college basketball, is far behind in the quality of its politicians. John Edwards, for instance. Not only did he father a bastard while running for President of the United States, his wife was dying of cancer at the time and he didn’t admit parenthood until two years later. The “Tarheel State” can also lay claim to one of our larger shitheels.
In a blue state.
I like a pile-on as much as the next man if the next man is on the bottom. So, I won’t join the chorus of liberals complaining about Pres. Barack Obama’s lack of progress towards health care reform and regulating Wall Street. Instead, I will hold my breath until these policy initiatives are achieved. If they find my limp, blue body slumped over my computer, you’ll know who to blame. That’s right, the Republicans!
Obama's SOTU speech was well-written & well-delivered. Sadly, the address was given before a corrupt, inept, self-serving legislative body and heard by a disenchanted populace. Despite some well-deserved digs @ the GOP and the High Court, it espoused too many Conservative principles, and unless Obama learns how to arm-twist like LBJ, he will never score any legislative victories.
ReplyDeleteThe Mass. election results were a product of a slick campaign by Brown, anger over the burgeoning number of incumbent Mass. Dems under indictment, and Coakley choking like Brown's 200,000-mile worn truck in the campaign spotlight.
The 5-4 Supreme Court vote on corporate campaign contributions and Justice Alito's indecorous behavior during the SOTU are the principal reasons not to abandon Obama entirely because Justice Stevens is more powder than solid nowadays and another Court appointee looms on the horizon.
This is the same Lt. Gov. Bauer who doesn't grasp why the federal court overturned his effort to have South Carolina issue license plates bearing a cross on a stained glass church window and a "We Believe" slogan. Who won the War of Northern Aggression, er, Civil War anyway?
Hey John Edwards--there may not be 2 Americas, but there are 2 Edwards' households, you sexual sociopath solon!
As for Obama's stalled political agenda, with friends like Harry Reid & Tim Geithner, what's an illegitimate Kenyan-born Socialist to do?
"Sexual Sociopath Solon!" You get the "Lex Barker" award for the best lambasting with legal language and the "Initial Vowel" prize for astute alliteration.
ReplyDeleteWhile acknowledging that "bastard" is a technically correct description of the child that John Edwards fathered with Rielle Hunter, it's still an ugly word to use about a child who had no control over the circumstances of her conception and birth. It's my only quibble with your latest issue, which I've been eagerly awaiting.
ReplyDeleteStill with John Edwards, I emailed a friend recently with whom I'd discussed presidential contenders way back when, and readily admitted that I'm obviously a poor judge of political character. Before Obama, my first choice for President was John Edwards. Ouch.
Oh, and on that smell. Perhaps some of it is wafting down from Canada. We have our own political crises happening right now with a Republican-style, control-freak Conservative Prime Minister who has closed down our parliament for unacceptable political purposes, (to avoid disclosure of his government's Afghan torture knowledge); who is stacking our redundant Senate with cronies he can control; and embarrassing Canada on the world stage with regressive climate change policies. Oh, and he appears regularly on American Fox News. Need I say more? You are not alone.
Thanks for your great writing.
Your comment on the word, "bastard" is well taken. The child in question did not choose her parents and should not be held accountable for their ethics. Judging from your description, contemporary Canadian politics are a frozen waste. Since both the Canadian Prime Minister and Sarah Palin (of Alaska) are on Fox News, maybe the problem is broader and geographic in nature? Can we shift your government a little further south? How about Chicago?
ReplyDeleteThank you for your gracious response.
ReplyDeleteAbout shifting our government, thank you, but I wouldn't wish our current regime on Chicago, or on any other city. Thousands of Canadians (we're not always passive) across Canada rallied in outdoor protests against our current government's actions on January 23rd. I was among them, me, an old lady of 63 years - a child of the '60s who never before publicly protested - out in a protest march with placard and anger.
I wish the problem were more geographic in origin. Perhaps climate change (Canada is warming slightly, and our current government is effectively silent on the issue) might take care of it.
